has been a mixed bag of freedom and isolation
all the rules that keep us marching in time
might hold us back but they hold us together

there’s gotta be a better way
to feel like you’re part of something great
than by drawing boundaries around
what brings you power
and calling it truth
cause truth is bigger than you

god is mostly cool
in concept if not in proof
cause everyone who’s ever told me that they’ve heard him
has followed it up with how their faith makes them feel weak

and maybe somewhere i learned wrong
that love reigns unconditional
so why does everyone i know who
survived the church and came out whole
have war stories of relearning how
to love themselves

it took until i was way too old
to learn the names of colors that they wouldn’t tell me about
and i’m still not sure what my favorite is
but i’m trying them on to see if they fit

better than the ones i was assigned
at the very least they’re so much brighter
and they don’t take away any beauty that they may
be surrounded by, they make them feel more right
